Latest exhibition in New York City
I'm currently painting in New York City and visiting the New York Affordable Art Fair. The previous two years I've had sell-out shows at this event. Although I'm not showing at the NYAAF this year (neither my Australian nor London gallery have booths), I'm substituting with a solo show at Ingbar Gallery which gave me my first solo show in New York 5 years ago.
The show is called "Light and Shade" and these are a few paintings from the collection. View the entire collection HERE:
Facing the Blank Canvas
I was recently interviewed by UK magazine 'Artists & Illustrators' on my painting technique. This article reveals a neat strategy for overcoming your fears and quickly covering up white space that will help create a lively and atmospheric painting.
A blank canvas can put off many artists. Making that first stroke can be intimidating, just as facing a blank page can be an obstacle for an author. To avoid this, I like to approach painting much more simply.

ArtChat Interview with Red Hill Gallery
Thanks Red Hill Gallery!
Thanks to Margaret and all the staff at Red Hill gallery, Brisbane for a great exhibition. Thank you also to the more than 30 buyers of paintings. Now back on my scooter and off to the studio to make more paintings for the next exhibitions in Hong Kong and Singapore and Mt Tamborine.

Heading to London for June shows
I'm exhibiting in Londin at the Hampstead Art Fair and at Store St gallery in June and will travel to London via Paris and Morocco. Don't be surprised to see some Moroccan paintings appearing at the London shows.
New York Art fair - April 2014
I've just returned from a sellout exhibition at the 2014 New York Affordable Art Fair and thought I'd share some of my painting with you.
Showing at Tosari Galleries, Toowoomba
I'm delighted that after spending my formative years growing up in Toowoomba I'm now represented by that city's premier gallery, Tosari Galleries, Margaret Street. Working with Rosie and staff there has been a delight. I'm very fortunate to have 9 galleries representing me from London to New York, Brisbane, Noosa, Maroochydore, Sydney, Melbourne, Sorrento, Mt Tamborine and now Toowoomba!
Toowoomba Chronicle - Media
2014 is set to be another big year.
I'll be participating in Battersea Art Fair in March, the New York Art Fair in April, the Hong Kong Contemporary Art Fair in May and back to London in June for both the Hampstead Art Fair and my first joint exhibition in London at Store St Gallery, Bloomsbury (off Tottenham Court Rd). Then in the latter half of the year I'll be back in Australia with an exhibition at Red Hill Gallery Brisbane.
With successful exhibitions in New York, London, Brisbane, Mt Tamborine and Melbourne, it certainly was a busy 2013. There were a number of 'firsts'. I had the first exhibition of my paintings in London when Store St Gallery took my paintings to the Hampstead Art Show in June this year. The last exhibition for the year -- Manyung Galleries, Mt Eliza Victoria -- also happened to be my first exhibition in Victoria.
I am indebted to the galleries which show my work, the great staff who sell them and of course the many people both in Australia and around the world who buy my paintings. I wish all a very successful and healthy 2014.
Graydon exhibition a great success
Thanks to more than 200 people who attended the opening, closing and workshops through the recent Graydon Gallery exhibition 'Here There and Everywhere' from Oct 3 -12. We sold well and had a great time, especially at the public painting demonstrations where I finished 4 portraits of local identities.

Graydon Gallery opening October 2013
Musicians from Brisbane band, KOOII were on hand to help celebrate the opening of David Hinchliffe's exhibition, "Here There and Everywhere" at Graydon Gallery, 29 Merthyr Rd, New Farm on Oct 5. A group from the NSW Art Gallery also attended the opening along with more than 50 locals and visitors from Sydney and Melbourne. This video was prepared by Alice Hinchliffe Productions.
Iterations...
Paintings often go through a number of iterations before an artist feels they're ready for display in a gallery. Here are 3 paintings by David Hinchliffe which have been through various iterations, some of them taking more than a year until the artist was finally satisfied. Each panel represents the one painting. The first (a Poinciana tree in Merthyr Park, New Farm) has had two iterations. The second ('Abbott Street Spring") has had 3 versions over a period of almost 2 years, starting with a monochromatic streaked blue version and ending with the pared back green version. The last painting of diners at the French cafe, Les Deux Magots, has undergone 4 different phases, ending in the final version where two waiters were added.
